The evening will honor Charles A. Sklar, M.D., Director of the Long-Term Follow-Up Program, and Department of Pediatrics at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center with the Pioneer Award for Pediatric Cancer Survivorship Care.
Dr. Sklar remarked in speaking about the award, "I am deeply honored to receive this year's Pioneer Award from the Children's Brain Tumor Foundation for our work in the care of survivors. This tribute is especially meaningful as the Foundation has done so much to improve the lives of children with these diseases and their families."
In addition, John Crowley, Executive Chairman of Amicus Therapeutics will receive the Dream & Promise Award. International Chair for the event, H.E. Khalid bin Jabor Al-Thani, M.D., MSHA, Founder, Chairman and President of the Qatar National Cancer Society will be recognized for his enormous efforts around the globe on behalf of children and families coping with cancer.
John F. Crowley is presently the Executive Chairman of Amicus Therapeutics, based in Cranbury, NJ. Amicus is a publicly held biopharmaceutical company working on the development of drugs to treat a range of human genetic diseases. Mr. Crowley's involvement in the industry stems from the 1998 diagnosis of his two youngest children, Megan and Patrick, with Pompe disease: a rare and fatal neuromuscular disorder.
In 2000, he helped to found a five-person start-up biotech company, Novazyme Pharmaceuticals, focused exclusively on developing a treatment for Pompe. On January 9, 2003, Patrick and Megan began to receive an experimental therapy developed by Genzyme that has saved their lives. They continue to fight the battle against Pompe.
Dr. Khalid is the Founder and President of the Qatar National Cancer Society, and he has served as its Chairman since its inception in 1997. He has also served as Chairman of the Gulf Union Against Cancer since 2000. In addition to his work with the Qatar National Cancer Society and the Gulf Union Against Cancer, Dr. Khalid served as the Vice Chairman of the National Health Authority in Qatar.
The Children's Brain Tumor Foundation was founded in 1988 by a group of parents, physicians and friends to improve the treatment and quality of life for children with brain and spinal cord tumors. The Foundation funds scientific research both nationally and internationally, raises awareness and provides support to families coping with this disease. In 2006, the Foundation created the only nationwide Survivorship Program for childhood brain tumor survivors. Pediatric brain cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in children under the age of 20, and most who survive suffer life-long challenges.
The 9th annual Dream and Promise Awards Benefit, produced by Charlotte Simon Productions, is the signature fundraising event for the Children's Brain Tumor Foundation. Funds raised support the organization's program and education efforts including its new Survivorship Program and helps fund research to advance treatment and progress toward cures.
