Grand Opening of The Gallery at The Chapel of Jimmy Ray

The Grand Opening at the Chapel of Jimmy Ray will take place on Saturday, February 4, 2012, at 1pm, on the grounds of Casa de Las Ranas in Cieneguita, Mexico, 5 km from San Miguel de Allende. The Inaugural Exhibit will feature the art of Chapel crea

The Chapel compound consists of three structures and is an evolving display of visionary art. Anado McLauchlin began constructing the Compound five years ago and has dedicated it to his mythical Muse...one Jimmy Ray. Mr. McLauchlin has created a recyclers' wonderland, using over 20,000 recycled bottles in the construction. Even the composting toilet, known as the Caca Majal or Casa de Caca, was constructed with hundreds of bottles. The whole compound is awash in ravishing color--in paint, bottles and mosaic designs. The Chapel Compound is an ongoing life project for Mr. McLauchlin--it will go on changing over the years.

At the opening, Mr. McLauchlin will be presenting his irreverent assemblages entitled Installed Poetry: Assemblages from the Major Arcana of the Tarot. Mr. McLauchlin's interest in the esoteric iconography of the Tarot Deck was the springboard for this particular show, a way of presenting poetic statements outside the boundaries of the printed word.

When artist Spencer Tunick visited Mexico City in May 2007 to photograph 18,000 people in a massive nude assemblage in the city's main square -- the Zócalo -- he visited the Andres Blaisten Collection. Mr. Tunick and Mr. Blaisten planned the project which we are so fortunate to be presenting on February 4th in Cieneguita: a series of 30 individual photos of naked women and men, directly or subtly related with some of the works from the Blaisten Collection.

The artworks were made in the streets of Mexico City between the 15th and the 18th of January 2009. As is common in his works, in this series of thirty images Mr. Tunick does not accentuate sexuality, but the body, the nude that bursts into the public space, and at the same time reconfigures it.

The upcoming Grand Opening promises to be quite a spectacle. In addition to the colorful buildings and the remarkable setting, players from the experimental theater troupe Cartaphilus Teatro of Mexico City will be moving through the compound in costume in various unexpected ways. Also, Hierbabuena Cocina, San Miguel's innovative Gourmet Food Truck, will be present selling their treats. Patrice Wynne will be reprising her role as Mistress of Ceremonies that she played at the 2007 groundbreaking of the Chapel. Fortunately both Mr. McLauchlin and Mr. Tunick will be in attendance.
