Grauer School Students Tour Holographic Theater
Online, December 11, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Encinitas, CA----On Friday, December 3, 2010, Grauer School students were invited to tour the state-of-the-art holographic facilities of AV Concepts, a company that specializes in Musion Eyeliner, a unique high-definition video holographic projection system allowing spectacular freeform 3D hologram effects to be projected within a live stage setting using Peppers Ghost illusion. Eyeliner produces images of extraordinarily high resolution and intense quality that make subjects unmistakably real. The technique was used recently when Gorillaz and Madoanna performed the opening number at the 2010 Grammy Awards and is also utilized regularly by Disney Studios. Grauer School teacher Morgan Brown took his Physics class to the workshop in order to expose the students to the experience and learn about the latest technological advances in audio/visual applications.
Brown explains, "My goal was to give the students a chance to see a hands-on and real-world application for the science and technology they learn about in school and that the sciences can lead to exciting career paths that really affect people's daily lives in ways we often don't think about." The visit inspired student Audrey Grauer who noted, "We entered the holographic theater and saw a life-like image of Michael Jackson performing his signature moon walk dance --- the image was incredibly life-like and three-dimensional. My classmate Maddy Swoy and I immediately started to discuss creative ways this technology could be used. In history classes we could recreate Thomas Jefferson crafting the Declaration of Independence or Albert Einstein developing an experiment in Science class. It was an amazing experience."
According to Nick Smith, co-owner and founder of AV Concepts, "The fun part of my job is bringing students into the holographic environment and watching them find creative ways to adopt the technology into their curriculum. We've found that students have higher learning retention when they see historical characters reenact landmark discoveries and accomplishments on stage. We call this 'telepresence', taking a high definition image of a person and recreating it in a real-life situation."
The Grauer School is an independent grades 6-12 college preparatory day school. Now celebrating its 20th year in San Diego's North County, the school is the regions only UNESCO affiliated institution.
