Greek Chamber Music Project Launches Record Label Celebrating Chamber Music from Greece

Label Releases Debut CD "Hellenic Song: A Musical Migration" on May 25.

The Greek Chamber Music Project (GCMP) is pleased to announce the launch of its own record label, releasing a debut album titled “Hellenic Song: A Musical Migration” on May 25, 2015. The upcoming CD is a collection of sonatas, suites, and popular songs by contemporary Greek composers featuring Mary-Victoria Voutsas (piano and vocals), Ellie Falaris Ganelin (flute), and Anna Matijasic Hennessy (violin).

“We’re so thrilled to be launching this label under the Greek Chamber Music Project,” says Ellie Falaris Ganelin, flutist and GCMP founder. “Our goal is to release recordings of this music so that people around the world can enjoy the rich, musical repertoire coming out of Greece and the Greek diaspora.”

The CD features a mix of Western classical works by Greek composers, as well as some popular songs by Manos Hadjidakis. But no work purely fits into a particular style — the popular songs take on a modern twist with arrangements for Wurlitzer piano, prepared piano, violin, and voice. Many of the classical selections are influenced by distinctly Greek scales, modes, and dance rhythms.

The artists will be releasing the CD “Hellenic Song: A Musical Migration” with a special performance at The John F. Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage on May 25, 2015. For those unable to attend the live performance in Washington, DC, there will be a live video stream of the concert, as well as a video archive of the performance on the Kennedy Center’s website. This performance is presented in cooperation with the Embassy of Greece as part of the citywide European Month of Culture, and with support from the Hellenic Society Prometheas.

The Greek Chamber Music Project (GCMP) is devoted to playing the music of contemporary Greek composers, shedding light on little-known works, as well as visiting familiar songs in a new way. GCMP's concerts of all-Greek works are so unique, that similar programs are rarely performed even within Greece. GCMP has received support from the Hellenic Society Prometheas, the Greek Department at the University of Michigan, the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
