Online shopping sites have come up as a benefit for people who either don't find time to browse through the goods available in the crowded market, or don't prefer to go to the bazaar to buy what they want. In the past few years, online shopping sites started emerging as a trend among Indians, however, according to the digital measurement firm comScore Inc, in November 2011, the trend took a sharp upward move when 27.2 million Indians above 15 years of age logged in to an online shopping portal. This was a remarkable observation that confirms a growth of 18% in the online shopping industry in India within a year. Since then, internet shopping has been on an upsurge, although majority of Indian online shoppers look for discount stores where they can buy sale items at discounted prices. Analysts, however, believe that the trend will soon shift towards luxury shopping, considering the increase in online window shopping for luxury goods not sold or not made available in Indian shops.

According to The Nielsen Global Online Shopping Report, more than 4 out of ten Indian online consumers declare that they spend more than 11% of their monthly expenses on online shopping. The findings also pronounce that towards the latter part of 2012, Indian online shoppers will presumably buy Airline ticket/reservations (40%), Books (41%), and Electronic equipment like Television, Mobile, Camera, etc. (36%) through online shopping portals.

Online shopping is not just making shopping easy by saving time and offering lucrative deals and discounts, but the availability of user reviews and quick social media plug-ins help in decision making and choosing the right product. Probably, all the benefits of eCommerce collectively contribute in attracting more and more shoppers to the virtual shops.

The stats also state that 87% online purchases in India are related to travel. They include holiday packages, and airlines and railway reservations.

People are buying online virtual as well as physical goods and services. Apart from the travel based online shopping, the most bought products and services online include matrimonial services, event management, classifieds, gift vouchers, mobile phones, cameras, bags, online gaming, baby products, apparels, jewellery and home care products.

Online shopping sites are reaping huge benefits from their services like Free Home Delivery, Cash on Delivery, Replacement and Refunding. Online shoppers in India are not comfortable until they find all these features with the site, and there is nothing that can replace them; not even wider variety.

By the time eCommerce was introduced in India, the rest of the world already an established eCommerce market. Slower, but steadier, Indian ecommerce markets have finally created a huge demand from urban cities, rural areas as well as shoppers overseas.
