Guelph Councillor Participates in Second Annual PKD Walk

Guelph City Councillor Todd Dennis will join the second annual Walk for Polycystic Kidney Disease September 9, raising awareness and funds for Canadian PKD research.

Dennis strongly believes in volunteering and participating in community organizations.

"Polycystic Kidney Disease affects 1 in 500 people, yet there is little awareness in the community and it often goes undiagnosed," Dennis said. "While there is no cure currently, education about lifestyle choices can be helpful in slowing the progress of the disease.

"As a Guelph City Councillor, I was pleased to lend my support to the initial Guelph Walk for PKD last year and I'll be supporting the walk again this September. I am happy to contribute to the PKD Foundation of Canada's efforts to raise funds for research work into treatments and a possible cure."

Registration for the Walk takes place at Riverside Park at noon on September 9, 2012.

The five- kilometre Walk starts promptly at 1pm and will be followed by a post-walk BBQ for registered participants, courtesy Money Direct. Walk participants will also have the chance to win winery tour passes, tickets to the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory, and more.

Guelph Walk for PKD Coordinator Carrie Manson says she hopes more people will come and join in, starting with the pre-Walk party on August 20.

"I am proud to be involved with the Foundation and the Hamilton-Guelph Chapter. This year, we're trying to top the almost $5,000 we raised at our first Walk. The support of the community will help make it happen and we're taking the opportunity to thank everyone in advance at our pre-Walk celebration."

The pre-Walk and first anniversary party for the Hamilton-Guelph Chapter of the PKD Foundation of Canada will be held on August 20 at Boston Pizza on Woodlawn Road West in Guelph, from 6pm to 9pm.

There will be free snacks and soft drinks, and raffle tickets for prizes including a signed Dionn Phaneuf jersey will be available.
