Guitar Learners Beware: Rock Stars Don't Always Make Good Music Teachers

In reference to the release of an iPad app by 'On The Path,' Blues Guitar Unleashed founder Griff Hamlin has written an article on the dangers of assuming that your favorite rock star can teach you what you need to know.

IPad app maker, 'On The Path,' will be releasing a new iPad app that claims to allow students of various instruments to learn directly from Grammy award winning artists such as Jackson Browne and Ravi Shankar according to their latest release at http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/on-the-music-path-ipad-app-offers-users-in-depth-one-on-one-lessons-taught-by-master-musicians-including-jackson-browne-ravi-shankar-and-richard-thompson-120766969.html. But Griff Hamlin, founder of Blues Guitar Unleashed, in his latest post at http://bluesguitarunleashed.com/new-technology-doesnt-necessarily-mean-better-learning/ cautions music learners against assuming their favorite rock stars are going to be able to actually teach them what they need to know.

According to http://onthepath.com the app will be available on the 28th of April and will have lessons from artists such as Jackson Browne, Ravi Shankar, Leland Sklar, Roscoe Beck, Luis Conte, Scott Tenant, and several others. However, as Griff points out, "Being a rock star and being a good musician are not mutually inclusive. In other words, just because you're a rock star doesn't mean you can play well... and it certainly doesn't mean you can teach."

Griff goes on to point out that, "Teaching guitar, or any instrument, and being good at it requires experience, patience, and an actual desire to see your students improve. You have to take time and notice the things that work and the things that don't. You can't just teach something some way because that's the way you learned it."

The technology, however, is not a bad thing in and of itself. As Griff says, "having the ability to slow down the videos and record yourself... these are all great things. But if the people actually providing the instruction are not doing their job, the rest of it won't matter at all."
