Hastings & Hastings observers that the faster a vehicle is moving, the more time it will need to come to a stop in the event of an emergency. As a general rule, drivers should leave a distance of 1 car length per 5 MPH they are traveling between then and the vehicle they are following. A driver moving at a speed of 65 MPH should leave a space of 13 car lengths, or approximately 130 feet, between them and the car ahead.
