Phoenix, AZ, July 9, 2015 (Newswire.com) - Governor Doug Ducey recently declared June 14th through the 19th monsoon awareness week, but Hastings and Hastings encourages all Arizonans to be mindful of monsoons for the entirety of summer. Indeed, every week could potentially be monsoon week.
Monsoons are characterized as sudden storms that blow through Arizona in the summer months. It is not uncommon for a cloudless day to quickly turn to overcast, followed swiftly by a raging wind and native rain storms called monsoons. It may surprise some to learn that monsoons are actually caused by radical temperature changes between the sea and land—given that Arizona is essentially a secluded desert. But the wind can blow this whirlwind of a pressure system from the California shores to the valley of the sun leading to a terrible storm.
“We encourage everyone to be mindful of the dangers associated with the monsoon season. If you are driving while a monsoon strikes suddenly, then head home ASAP, or pull your car over and let the storm pass if warranted,” said David Hastings, president and attorney at Hastings & Hastings.
Monsoons can be very unpleasant. The combination of extreme heat, intense moisture, and high humidity and thunderstorms can be unbearable. The Arizona Department of Emergency Management urges all residents to be on guard between the months of June and mid-September. The following statement was also released by the ADEM: “the extreme heat of summer can also be dangerous, even deadly.”
Indeed, dehydration, sun poisoning, and heat exhaustion are very real threats that could assail anyone exposed to extreme temperatures for a long period of time. People over the age of sixty-five years old, young children, and individuals in poor health or with pre-existing medical conditions, are particularly prone to heat related illnesses. It is highly advisable that the summer months are traversed with extreme caution. Everywhere there is something waiting to hurt you: sun poisoning, monsoons, and even snakes in the summer. Drink plenty of water, and be vigilant.
