Health Alert: Holistic Doctor Explains Why Nutritional Supplements Don't Work
Recently, media picked up on a medical journal editorial dismissing the value of nutritional supplements. A holistic doctor explains why the editorial was flawed and what people can learn from it.
Online, January 27, 2014 (Newswire.com) - In December, the editorial team of the medical research journal, The Annals Of Internal Medicine, shut the door with an air of finality on several thousands of years of human healing practices using food, herbs and minerals.
In an editorial titled "Enough Is Enough: Stop Wasting Money on Vitamin and Mineral Supplements", a team of doctors and researchers concluded there is no basis for the use of nutritional supplements in treating disease.
The editorial referred to several recent studies that showed multivitamins and a few vitamin combinations did not make a difference in heart disease, cancer, dementia or all-cause mortality.
"I agree we need to pay attention to results of these studies," notes Dr. Michael E. Rosenbaum, MD. "They underscore some important reasons why nutritional supplements don't work in specific situations. But if anything, these studies only highlight the mistakes people and doctors make when it comes to using supplements. Simply put, when people choose poor quality supplements and use the wrong supplement for the wrong reasons, supplements don't do much good."
The key is to make knowledgeable choices. To help people do this, Dr. Rosenbaum offers a few criteria for using supplements effectively.
First, he recommends paying attention to dosage. Three of the studies the editorial team used to make their case showed multivitamins did little to change the risk of brain problems, cardiovascular issues after a heart attack or overall health risks for older people.
In trying to cover the whole spectrum of nutrition without overdoing it in any one area, multivitamins usually only offer a small percentage of the nutrients needed to take care of a specific health concern. And often enough they include nutrients many people don't even need depending on how they eat.
For example, most multivitamins contain 400 IU or less of vitamin D. This is the official recommended daily allowance for vitamin D. However, based on blood level testing, most holistic doctors recommend at least 1000 IU - sometimes as much as 5000 IU - to achieve healthy vitamin D levels in the blood.
"Multivitamins provide a baseline for nutrition," says Dr. Rosenbaum. "Not strategic intervention that can really make a difference. You have to know your specific nutritional needs and tailor your supplementation to this. But furthermore, the studies cited here did not account for the notoriously poor quality of ingredients in most popular multivitamins. It's like ignoring the nutritional difference between week-old wilted spinach in your fridge and freshly picked organic spinach. Multivitamins have a well-earned reputation for containing ineffective, poorly absorbed, low-quality ingredients."
Finally, Dr. Rosenbaum advises people look for natural and whole food supplements. He notes that research has demonstrated with vitamins like A and E that the body cannot use synthetic versions effectively.
"We can try to mimic nature by synthesizing vitamins in labs," explains Dr. Rosenbaum. "But your body usually can tell the difference and reacts to them differently. This has been proven in studies. And this becomes magnified when you look at the difference in how whole food supplements promote health versus single nutrient supplements. The nutrients in whole foods work synergistically like a symphony. Science has documented numerous examples of the enhanced results this whole food nutrition brings."
