hiroshima and nagasaki day
Online, August 10, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Ex. MLA and Ex. Mayor of Vishakapatnam Smt. Rajana Ramani today address college students on Hiroshima and Nagasaki day.
While addressing to the students she told that 6th August 1945, is a sad day in human history when Hiroshima was ravaged by the dropping of the first atom bomb, is a grim reminder to all o0f us of the perils of nuclear weapons.
She told that in the morning at about 8.15 am 4000 pound heavy atom bomb was dropped killing 78,150 people and injuring 37,425 people with13,983 missing. Thousands of people became victims of radiation and of
the90,000 buildings of Hiroshima
62,000 were destroyed and 6000 severely damaged 180 of the 200 doctors and 1654
of the 1780 nurses of the city were killed and only 3 of the 45 hospitals were
not razed to the ground. The horror story of death and destruction leaves a
message to all of us that there will be hundreds of such cities and towns if we
allow nations to go to war in the21st century. The end of the world has become
a man made possibility as there is TNT enough to destroy planet earth thirteen
times over!
She further told that it was in the same year, 1945 that the United Nations was born to prevent "the sourge of war" and to promote peace. The UN Charter of 111 articles in 8000 words is a charter for peace and Development.
As the UNESCO declared "war against the minds of Men". A Writer has aptly said
that "the minds of men are nurtured in nurseries". That means the lessons of
peace must be instilled in the young minds right from childhood at home and in
schools.
She told that the challenge before humankind is to end poverty and backwardness. Sad it is to note that every ten minutes a child is dying in the world for want of medical attention and every hour a woman is
losing her life for the same reason.
She added that the money that is spent on weapons and soldiers runs into billions, apart of which is enough to wipe out disease and poverty. Shame indeed that the world spends a meager amount on medical research and 30
times more than that on military research. There can be no peace unless poverty
is eliminated. That is why Pope John II rightly declared that development is
another name for peace.
She told that India is a country of peace. From this land went emissaries of peace as early as 3rd Century BC to different parts of the world carrying the message of Goutham Buddha. India gave birth to another mighty Soul Mahatma
Gandhi, who shone like a beacon not only for India but for the entire world and Gandhiji's
mission was to wipe every tear from every eye. Let us all take a pledge to work
for human development, peace and universal brotherhood. Such good and noble
work must begin in cities towns and villages at every home and in every school,
so that the 21st century will be a century of peace and hope for
humankind.
Smt. Rajana Ramini is the only Mayor from Andhra Pradesh who attended the World Mayor's conference for Peace and Solidactory held at Hiroshima and Nagasaki earlier.
