Hollywood Production of "The Fantasticks" Sets the Record Straight on "Rape"
Online, May 5, 2010 (Newswire.com) - The word "rape" originally appeared in THE FANTASTICKS describing how El Gallo (a bandit) would fake the kidnapping of a girl (at the request of her Father) so her boyfriend could rescue her. It has since been replaced with "abduction."
"Reports have incorrectly said we will be performing the original wording of the scene. We will not," defends director Christopher Chase.
"The word 'rape' was included as a tongue-in-cheek synonym for 'abduction.' However, despite its initial comedic intent, this word has no place in a modern production. Rape is very serious, and we will not create jokes at its expense."
Despite this media misunderstanding, the show promises to be a success. "We are very excited to bring this show to Hollywood...our audiences will be laughing right there with us."
THE FANTASTICKS is a family-friendly show, and contains songs, movement, and humor suitable for all ages.
The show runs Fri/Sat/Sun at 7:30pm at 6470 Santa Monica Blvd in Hollywood, CA 90038. Tickets are $20 ($15 for Seniors & Students).
