Holocaust Heroine Inspires AIDS Activist on Life Raft for 14 Days

"During my 14 days on the life raft without food, I drew deep inspiration from the Diary of Ann Frank and Psalms 91. I hope this seven year journey will share the importance of humanity", said Mooney at his home.

New York City - Victor Mooney of Forest Hills, whose third attempt to row across the Atlantic Ocean from Africa to New York ended in a rescue, will be joined by his medical team, local officials and supporters at City Hall. On his second day on the life raft, Mooney was turned away from a ship. Twelve days later, he was rescued by MV Norfolk, a bulk carrier based in Athens, Greece that was heading to Brasil.

Mooney was attempting to raise money for AIDS medicines and bring awareness of voluntary HIV testing. The rower has lost one brother to AIDS and another is HIV positive.

"During my 14 days on the life raft without food, I drew deep inspiration from the Diary of Ann Frank and Psalms 91. I hope this seven year journey will share the importance of humanity", said Mooney at his home.

"On the morning of before my rescue, I placed a small note in the ocean. It was addressed to those who died during the transatlantic slave trade. At around 6pm, MV Norfolk diverted its course and proceeded to me. I am blessed to be alive", Mooney added.

The rower arrived from Brasil on Sunday.
