Homeowners Take Advantage Of Free Rain Water

Keen gardeners worried about the current hosepipe ban are being urged to take advantage of the free water and lay their grass now.

Keen gardeners should take advantage of the heavy rain and lay their new turf now!

There may be a hosepipe ban in areas of South East England but May is the perfect time to lay that fresh green lawn and get free water!

Emma Scott from Turf Supplies Direct said May is the ideal month to plan the laying of new turf as there are sunshine and showers.
"We are expecting temperatures to remain cool for the next two weeks so get your new turf now. There's definitely a window of opportunity to get it down and get free water".
She added: "There's all this free water coming out of the sky so don't waste the opportunity".

Figures from the Met Office have shown that it has been the wettest April in the UK for over 100 years.

Some areas have seen three times their usual average and it is reported that 121.8mm of rain has fallen, beating the previous record of 120.3mm which was set in 2000.
Emma Scott said the extra rain is great news for gardeners and farmers.
"There's that much rain come down that the fields are looking great. They're in fantastic condition," she said.

There is no need to use pre-turfing fertilisers as the lawn is already fed and once down it doesn't require anything apart from watering and mowing for 8 weeks.

Gardeners should also maximise any rainfall by collecting it in a water butt. During long periods of dry weather a garden can be kept well moisturised by filling a watering can with water from the butt.

Watering cans are not part of the Government's hosepipe ban, which has affected around 20 million people. People found flouting the law risk being prosecuted and could be fined up to £1,000.

Emma works for one of the country's leading turf suppliers and they are used to maintaining lawn turf supplies in all weathers.

They advise watering your lawn in the evening and not to panic excessively about the hosepipe ban.

A grass seed can live for up to 200 years and it will germinate again when the conditions are right. In the dry state of Texas there are complete water restrictions for 10 months of the year and the grass survives.
