Homes by Taber Raises $5,250 for Komen Central & Western OK

Oklahoma City, OK, November 23, 2016 (Newswire.com) - ​In 1982, with a $28,000 grant, Nancy Brinker founded the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in honor of her sister, who died of the disease two years earlier. Brinker believed the lack of breast cancer awareness prevented women from early detection and prevention, which might have saved Susan’s life.

One in eight women in the United States alone will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. More than 40,000 people—women and men—will die of the disease this year.

It's hard to find someone whose life hasn't been touched by cancer. That's a sad fact. It doesn't take a big effort to make a big difference. People need to remember that whether they are volunteering their time or donating their money, every little bit helps.

To date, Komen has raised and invested more than $2.2 billion in research and life-saving programs, like education, screening, and emergency financial support. The rate of deaths from breast cancer has declined 37% between 1990 and 2011. When Komen was founded in 1982, the survival rate for early stage breast cancer was 74%. Today, 99% of these patients survive.

Looking ahead for the coming decade, Komen seeks to reduce the number of breast cancer deaths by 50%.

The success of Komen has resulted from individuals, groups, and businesses who pledge their support, volunteer their time, and contribute to making a difference. Homes By Taber recently completed its second annual event during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Oklahoma City-based homebuilder pledged $250 for every home sold during October in its 13 communities in Edmond, Moore, Mustang, Oklahoma City, Piedmont, and Yukon. In October 2015, the company donated $3,500 to Komen Central & Western Oklahoma. This year, the team set out to beat last year’s tally. They succeeded—raising $5,250 with the sale of 21 homes, almost 50% more than 2015’s total.
