Honda Innovates in Both Safety and Technology with New Smartphone App

Online, March 25, 2013 (Newswire.com) - It is a great time to be a Honda dealer, as the automaker is continually pushing drivers and other automakers to rethink the driving experience, which is why Honda Bloomfield is proud to announce that Honda's new smartphone app has been successfully able to reduce traffic jams and improve fuel efficiency.

University of Tokyo researchers partnered with Honda to design the app, working between September 2012 and February of this year and testing it on a toll road in Jakarta. The app instructed the driver when to speed up and slow down by monitoring the vehicle's acceleration and deceleration.

This may not seem like a particularly advantageous app, especially for drivers that have ever had to deal with an overbearing passenger or back seat driver, but the fact is that technology designed for vehicle optimization knows better than the driver when speeding up and slowing down is necessary.

Two separate methods were tested, one connected to a cloud computing system to monitor driving patterns and synchronize those of all the vehicles in the test as well as one that was a stand alone system.

Both methods provided impressive and encouraging results, delaying traffic jam formation by up to six minutes while also improving fuel efficiency by as much as 22 percent.

No release date has been given yet for the app, but since it appears incredibly effective and only advises the driver on whether or not to accelerate, there should be little in its way to coming toward iPhone and Android users soon.
