Honda Leads Most New IIHS Top Safety Pick Awards; Jack Matia Honda Has Them All

Online, December 22, 2011 (Newswire.com) - This year, a record number of new vehicles have been awarded top marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, with Honda seeing the most improvement among major automakers, and also winning the most model awards.

Since 2006, the Virginia-based non-profit organization has compiled an annual list of the vehicles that merit its "Top Safety Pick" award. To qualify for the award, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety examines each model with various tests. The Institute rates vehicles on a scale of good, acceptable, marginal, and poor based on the performance in high-speed front and side crash tests, a rollover test, in addition to evaluations of seat/head restraints.

New to the list this year, the 2012 IIHS Top Safety Pick was awarded to seven Honda models, three Acuras, three Toyotas, one Buick, one Scion, one Subaru, one BMW, and one Mercedes-Benz. The seven new Honda models plus other Hondas that remain on the list from the previous year include: the Honda Fit, Honda Civic 4-Door, Honda CR-Z, Honda Insight, Honda Accord, Honda CR-V, Honda Pilot, Honda Ridgeline, and the Honda Odyssey.

The IIHS stated that Honda and Acura saw substantial improvements in crash safety due to strengthened roof panels. IIHS spokesperson Russ Rader said, "Honda is really the most improved. Ten of the 18 new vehicles on the list are Honda or Acura models and their engineers went to the drawing board and improved...".
