Honda Puts the Future of Driving on Display - Heads Up Display
Nvidia's annual GPU Technology Conference saw the unveiling of new auto technology that could reinvent the way people drive.
Online, March 26, 2013 (Newswire.com) - People who have been following auto news lately might be a bit tired of hearing it, but Honda seems to be at the forefront of auto technology and innovation, and it gives Bruce Campbell Honda great pride to announce that the automaker looks to have no intention of losing pace, displaying new technologies at the annual Nvidia conference that could revolutionize the driving experience.
Honda has already received their fair share of praise for incorporating many modern technologies into even the basic levels of their 2013 models - from their unique i-MID interface to SMS voice to text capabilities to Bluetooth phone and audio syncing - but it looks like that is only the beginning.
The GPU Technology Conference saw Victor Ng-Thow-Hing, the principal research scientist at Honda's Mountain View, California, location demonstrate a heads up display (HUD) technology that makes approaches by other automakers look like they belong right alongside Bruce Boxleitner in Tron.
One of the biggest advantages of the system they are working on is its ability to project location specific information directly onto the windshield, with the ability to make them appear as signs on actual buildings. This would be especially advantageous in cities, where scouting around for street signs causes drivers to pay less attention to the road than they should.
The technology is designed to account for the fact that a 2D projection causes disorientation when drivers' brains try to reconcile it with the 3D world around them, creating a seamless fusion of the HUD and what drivers see through the windshield.
This is just one of the many new technologies being pioneered by Honda engineers, and while it may be some time before it is on the standard Honda models, at the rate they are going, it will probably be sooner than anyone thinks.
