Honda's All-New Electric Fit EV Available for Lease With Insurance

Online, July 7, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Honda recently announced that their new electric car, the Fit EV, comes with the unusual option of collision insurance without any deductible. Although this electric version of the award-winning Fit is only available for lease right now, the lease includes free collision insurance, maintenance and roadside assistance to all drivers.

While electric vehicle sales have been slow since their release in 2010, Honda hopes this marketing strategy will make-up for the slightly higher price of the EV. The amount of insurance each Fit EV owner will save is based on the person's driving record and address. Honda believes that the average savings for EV drivers will be around $600 a year.

Even though most EVs have the reputation of not being the fastest vehicle in the market, the Fit breaks the pattern. It features a 92kW high-density coaxial electric motor that produces 188 lb-ft. of torque and 123 horsepower. It also includes a 3-mode drive system so drivers can tailor the driving experience based on their preference: Sport, Normal and Econ.

The 6.6 kW onboard charger is capable of recharging a completely dead Fit EV battery in as little as three hours when using a 240-volt circuit. Drivers can also program when the charger turns on and off using the Multi-Information Display or an available Smartphone app.

The Fit EV will keep drivers happy with an EPA-estimated 132 city/105 highway miles per gallon. So, although they may be paying a little more up front for the electric Fit, they will save money in the long run at the pump.

Electric cars are still trying to work their way up in the automotive world. Honda officials hope that the free insurance that comes with the lease of the new Fit EV will remove the barrier of the introduction of Honda's first electric car in the United States.
