Honus Wagner Card Sells For $262,900

A Baltimore Catholic congregation sold a rare Honus Wagner baseball card for $262,900 through a Dallas auctioneer.

BALTIMORE, (UPI) -- A Baltimore Catholic congregation sold a rare Honus Wagner baseball card for $262,900 through a Dallas auctioneer.

The T206 card of the Pittsburgh Pirates player, which was graded in poor condition, earned $220,000 Thursday for the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Baltimore. They had received the card from an anonymous benefactor, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported Friday.

"It's always highly sought after, no matter what condition it's in," Chris Ivy, Heritage's director of sports auctions, said of the baseball card.

A near-mint condition Wagner card sold for $2.8 million in 2007.

The card at Thursday's auction was purchased by Doug Walton, managing partner of Walton Sports & Collectibles.

"For many years, I have been in the hunt for an original T206 Wagner in any condition," Walton said.
