Hot Wheels, Hot! Hot! Hot! at Gateway Gallery's Two Day Toy Auction

Online, March 22, 2012 (Newswire.com) - Chambersburg, PA - At Gateway Gallery Auction's March 16-17 toy auction, it was clear that collector enthusiasm for toys and, in particular, for Hot Wheels Redlines remains undiminished. The Redline auction was dubbed by many collectors "one of the largest single collections of Redlines seen at auction."
"The combination of condition, color variations, and rarity in one collection was compelling," said Micah D. Fowler, Catalog Specialist for Gateway. "We knew that we had been blessed with something special, but we had no idea just how special until the phones started ringing."
The two day event garnered massive attention, and bids, from collectors all over the world. Online and registered absentee bidders placed more than 7,700 bids. The absolute auction consisted of toys entirely from one man's collection; with approximately 50% of the lots being sold to online bidders. Prices below do not reflect the Buyer's Premium.
The Friday session of Winross, Tekno, Budgie, Matchbox, Siku and other Diecast toys included a 1964 B Mack Marx Hess Truck selling for $1,150 to an in house bidder. A Marx Hess Tanker in pristine condition selling to an online buyer for $440 and a 1976 Service Gas Truck selling in house for $325. Also of note, was a Terex GM TS-14B Scrapper selling for $250.
Following the catalog session on Friday, 100 traylots of diecast toys were sold to in-house and absentee bidders. These traylots held exceptional variety and included late 1970s and early 1980s diecast, as well as, seldom seen and obscure makers. This was a chance for in-house buyers to fill gaps in their collections, in a big way.
Saturday's session began promptly at 10 AM and featured 628 lots of Hot Wheel Redlines from Sizzlers to Spoilers, Super Chromes, Grand Prix and more.
The headliner for Session II was the rare Hot Wheels 1970 Dealer Display, which included 16 Redline cars. The display went to an in house bidder, selling at $4,600.
Shell Premiums attracted much attention with top lot #251 the 1973 Odd Job in orange, purple, light blue, blue and green selling for $3,600 to an in house bidder.
The online bidders struck back and battled it out for Hot Wheels #6214 Ford J Car in enamel blue, winning it at $3,300. "Because this was the first known blister pack of the Ford J Car in enamel blue; we knew that collectors would love this lot," said Fowler.
Other top lots include Hot Wheels #6211 Custom Barracuda Brown at $1,800. Also, selling for $1,800 was a set of 1973 Street Snorter Shell Premiums. A Grand Prix #6416 Porsche 917 purple found a new home at $1,350.
"This is a massive collection with diecast toys from every nearly every genre and maker," says Fowler "Not often do you see this quality in this volume."
Gateway Gallery will be holding numerous toy auctions, all from the same collector this year. The next scheduled sales are April 6 & 7, Farm and Corgi Toys; May 4 & 5, Johnny Lightening, Modern Hot Wheels and Planes, Trains and Automobiles; May 19, Dinky's; June 22 & 23, General Toys and Matchbox. Additional auctions will be scheduled as cataloging gets completed.
