Hot Wood Styles for the Coming Year: Douglas Fir Veneer and Prima Vera Veneer

Douglas Fir Veneer and Prima Vera Veneer are the hot style choices for builders, designers, and architects this year, says Peter Rodgers, owner of Oakwood Veneer in Troy, Michigan.

For a modern and sophisticated look, many designers are turning to Douglas Fir veneer and Prima Vera veneer this year, says Peter Rodgers, owner of Oakwood Veneer in Troy, MI. The hot style is a light wood grain, and both of these woods fit the bill quite nicely. A very large shipment of both veneers has just arrived at the Oakwood warehouse, and Rodgers expects more to be needed in the coming months to keep up with demand.

"Douglas Fir veneer is not like the plywood you find in lumberyards," Rodgers says. "It is a very fine quality with thin straight lines that resemble pinstripes. Prima Vera veneer is a bit more rare and exotic with stripes of red, orange, and brown for effect. Some call it the blonde Mahogany."

Douglas Fir, also known as Fir Douglas veneer, Doug Fir, or Vertical Grain Fir, is found on the west coast of the United States and is generally in a quartered cut, not rotary. Primavera (spelled as either one word or two), mostly comes from Central America and Mexico and can be stained to give designers even more choice of style.

Oakwood Veneer offers Douglas Fir veneer in multiple sizes - 4X8, 4X10, and 4X12, as well as 8X4 for counterfronts or crossgrain veneer, and edgebanding or edgetape. Prima Vera is available is available only in 4X8 and 4X10 sizes.
