Castle Cover, the over 50s insurance provider, has sponsored speedway legend Barry Briggs on his fund raising tour 'The Ride' where he and his son will be visiting various speedway locations throughout the UK. The aim of 'The Ride' is to raise money for the 'Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund'. The ride began at John o'Groats and went all the way to Cardiff stopping off at various locations on the way.

The charity is one which is close to Barry Briggs (Briggo) heart after his son's speedway career ended when he broke his neck. At one stage it was feared that Tony Briggs would never walk again, although he was lucky enough to make a full recovery.

Briggo, who is now 75, felt like time was running out and he wanted to give something back to the sport in which he enjoyed great success winning four world championships.

Fund raising started at the England v Egypt football match in February where Briggo was given a cheque from the Football Association. Since then he has been on the road for over 2 month visiting over 30 different events all over the UK.

Many of the events included visiting popular speedway grounds around the country. Briggo has enjoyed managing to meet lots of speedway fans and has been very impressed with their support, "[the] chance to meet thousands of speedway fans who have all been warm and generous has been brilliant" said Briggo.

When asked about the ride he stated "[I] could have done it standing on my saddle when I was 17". Briggo added "It has sometimes been hard riding in the rain on the motorway but the cause has been so worth it", "I've done it for the boys in the wheel chairs".

With 'The Ride' now entering the final stages and with only a couple of events to go Barry Briggs and his friends and family have to be applauded for their efforts. They've already raised over £50,000 and are looking to build on this amount even after the riding is over. It's good to see that Briggo hasn't lost his sense of humour with the ride adding "The motor cycle parts were easy compared to paying in the buckets of loose change into the banks!"

Castle Cover, the house insurance specialists, thought that the charity would form a great synergy with their sponsorship of their local speedway team, the Poole Pirates. The Poole Pirates are currently leading the Sky Sports Elite League and are in a great position to win the championship. Castle Cover felt this sponsorship opportunity was a way in which the company could help a wider range of speedway riders who have been injured in their careers.
