Statistics of Burglaries in Houston
In 2011, Houston topped a national list, for the wrong reason. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, citizens of Houston experienced the highest number of burglaries in all of the country.
Simple thefts such as swiping the tip jar at a restaurant have risen. Theft crimes are not only a concern to workers, though. People who live in homes must be aware of the amount of burglaries and thefts that occur in Houston each year.
In 2011, Houston police responded to almost 27,500 burglaries. Chicago is the only other city with a number that is anywhere near that high (26,400). Dallas comes up third with about 18,700 burglaries.
Avoid Burglaries
If you suspect suspicious activity or a crime, the first thing you need to do is call the police and report the crime. You can always remain anonymous when calling the police to report unnatural or suspicious activity.
Upgrade Locks
Pushbutton locks on doorknobs and minimum security deadbolt locks are vulnerable to even amateur burglars. You should upgrade the locks on all of your outside doors and most importantly, the sliding glass door.

Here are some additional tips to avoid burglaries. Do not leave your valuables in plain sight outside or inside. Lawnmowers, barbeque grills, and bicycles are three common items that are left outside. Lock these items up inside of the house or in the shed or garage so you don't tempt a burglar to try and take these items.
When you go out, leave a few lights on inside of the house to make it look like your home is occupied. If you're going away for a vacation or out of town for a period of time, then you should consider getting automatic lamps that automatically turn on in the evening and turn off during the day.
