How Siblings Handle Trauma: Secondary Post-Traumatic Stress In Family Members
There is a lot of buzz in the media about PTSD. But what about the siblings of those diagnosed? This week, an expert and a secondary-ptsd survivor weigh in on the issue on 'Your Life After Trauma'.
Online, September 9, 2011 (Newswire.com) - When trauma strikes it's not just survivors who are affected. Family members bear the brunt of response and recuperation support and advocacy. Often, the stress of this role can cause secondary post-traumatic stress. This week 'Your Life After Trauma' will feature Ari Hahn, LCSW and Marie Rosado, who will both be sharing about 'How Siblings Are Affected By Trauma'. The show airs Thursday, September 15h at 7pm EST, on Seaview Radio (95.9AM/106.9FM/960AM) and streams online at www.healmyptsd.com/your-life-after-trauma. Call in with your questions: 877.960.9960.
According to Michele Rosenthal, host of 'Your Life After Trauma', "I watched my brother deal with the aftereffects of my trauma, so I've seen firsthand how a survivor's experience can impact a sibling. How siblings manage, cope and heal their own secondary trauma wounds is a topic we don't discuss enough. My hope is that focusing on this subject will raise awareness for this aspect of trauma so that more siblings get the support they need and in this way entire families overcome trauma together."
'Your Life After Trauma' brings weekly support and information to trauma survivors, plus their caregivers and healing professionals on Thursday nights from 7-8pm EST, on Seaview Radio (95.9AM/106.9FM/960AM) in southeast Florida (and streaming live online) (http://www.healmyptsd.com/your-life-after-trauma). Your Life After Trauma provides resources, inspiration, hope and specific actions to help anyone learn to formulate a recovery plan, access healing potential and apply personal strengths to post-trauma recovery.

This week's guests will be:
Ari Hahn, LCSW, started his career in the 1970's helping soldiers in the Israeli Defense Forces negotiate the difficulties of military service. The 80's were dedicated to children and families and in 1987 he returned to the USA and attained an MSW and license in NY and NJ. He completed training in family therapy in the 90's and since 1998 has specialized in working with adolescent and adult survivors of childhood trauma. From this work he realized that spouses, siblings and families of survivors often need a different paradigm than the survivors themselves. Building on a strengths based approach, developed while working with the survivors, he helps people integrate individual and family positive traits with healing to promote thriving and flourishing lives. He uses both on-line therapy and coaching modalities which allows for maximum flexibility to the needs of the clients. In addition to his therapy and coaching he is a full professor of psychology at TCI College in NYC.
Marie Rosado became passionate about advocating for PTSD awareness after a traumatic event in her life two years ago. She started a blog to connect with others and to offer resources she did not have when both her sister and she were diagnosed. She is interested in studying Post Traumatic Growth to better understand the process of recovery from PTSD.
Marie is a graduate student of public health with a background in psychology; focusing her research and work on improving access to quality care for trauma survivors and advocating to increase information on trauma recovery. She hopes to bring awareness to the issues surrounding assault and treatment for trauma through her writing, advocacy and research.
Marie is currently working on finishing a memoir, Waiting for Sunrise, about her experience as a secondary survivor of trauma, and the transformative journey of healing through tragedy.
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder is a wholly treatable condition that results from a life-threatening experience in which the trauma survivor felt helpless. PTSD symptoms include insomnia, nightmares, flashbacks, emotional numbing, hyperarousal and hypervigilance.
