It requires effort over a good amount of time to create a successful website. Many people believe in their idea. As a result, they believe "if I build it (a website), they will come". Do you have to pay thousands of dollars to a web designer? The answer is "no". A typical new website launch will consist of 4 to 6 web pages. You can build a website yourself with 4 to 6 pages using such tools as Microsoft FrontPage (known today as Expression) or some other "sitebuilding" software. My recommendation here is not to do too much with your website, initially. The first version of your website will not be your last. If you should decide to pay someone to build your website, you will be amazed to find inexpensive web developers on craigslist.com, oDesk.com, or elance.com.
It is a bad assumption to believe that you must have a unique or a great product/service to be successful on the internet. You do not have to be first to the market to have a successful internet business. You do not have to have the best website or the best product/service. Neither does your product have to be unique. If the reason you have not launched a website is because you feel that you are "late to the game" or that someone is already selling that product, then you are mistaken. Every day, more successful businesses are launched based upon products/services that are already on the market. When Bob Parson's launched GoDaddy , he was not first to market. He began his domain registration business in 1997, it seemed that Network Solutions was the only place to register a domain name. At the time, Network Solutions was the market leader and had already obtained much of the market share. Through persistence and patience, Bob Parson was able to have success. In 2005, GoDaddy surpassed Network Solutions in market share in terms of total domain names registered according to wikipedia.org. This is one example, but there are millions of successful internet stories just like this one.
