Huawei Ascend G300 Trumps Orange San Francisco 2 as Best Bargain Android

The Huawei Ascend G300 is difficult to come by in the UK but consumers that are fortunate enough to find one will have access to a high quality budget Android smartphone packed with decent features and available for a little more than £100. When compared to other phones in a similar price bracket the Ascend G300 comes out on top for its screen size and quality, processor performance, and because it now sports Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which is an improvement over 2.3 Gingerbread.

Prior to the release of the Huawei Ascend G300, it was the Orange San Francisco that was considered to be the best value for money budget Android smartphone, manufactured by ZTE. However, a bigger screen, better battery life, improved processor, and improved processor go some way to ensuring that it is the Huawei that now holds the title as being the best value for money budget Android phone. Both cost around £100 to £120 and both are now quite difficult to get hold of but even a year after their official release they still both offer good value for money.

The 4" screen on the Huawei Ascend G300 is noticeably larger than the 3.5" San Francisco 2 screen. However, both screens have the same 480 x 800 pixel resolution and this means that it is actually the ZTE device with the higher pixel density - 267ppi vs 233ppi. Most consumers and reviewers deem the additional size to be worth the trade off in pixel density though.

Both budget phones use a single core processor, which is not surprising at the £100 price point. However, the Huawei Ascend G300 is the better of the two with a clock speed of 1000MHz compared to the 800MHz of the San Francisco 2. Both handsets offer 512MB of RAM and while this may not be masses it is enough for processors of this capability and enough to ensure that the majority of tasks are done quickly and responsively without too much delay or lag.

One area where the San Francisco 2 shades the competition, according to reviewers, is the camera. Not only does the San Francisco 2 offer a front facing camera which enables Skype and video calling but it has the better quality of the two 5mp rear facing cameras that are on offer in this benchmark. It provides a greater range of photographic features including facial recognition and night mode which means that consumers looking for a budget Android smartphone primarily for the use of the camera should arguably stick with the San Francisco 2.

The Android operating system has helped open the world of smartphones up to a greater number of people and both the Huawei Ascend G300 and the Orange San Francisco 2 are both worthy handsets at the budget end of the market. For its bigger screen and improved processor, though, it is the Huawei Ascend G300 that is widely considered to be the best value for money for a £100 Android phone.
