Hugh Hefner Talks Playboy Jazz Festival

The Playboy Creator speaks to TheCelebrityCafe.com about the Playboy brand and his annual Jazz Festival.

LONG ISLAND, NY - Hugh Hefner, the iconic founder of global brand Playboy, has been holding his Playboy Jazz festival since 1959 and, even at age 86, has yet to slow down.

Deemed "the single greatest weekend in Jazz," the first festival featured "everybody there, Louie Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Sammy Davis Jr., everybody," Hefner recalls.

Why Jazz? "It was the music of my youth, it was the most romantic music," he says. This certainly ties into the themes of his adult entertainment brand. "I think [it's] simply one of what makes the brand so popular," he explains, "The Festival is the music of our romantic heritage."

As in every facet of his label, Hefner proves a proficient promoter regarding the Festival. "We've been filling the [Hollywood] Bowl now for over 30 years." The Festival is a weekend-long event that succeeds "a number of pre-Jazz events throughout the city so it really has become a community affair." This year's festival will be the 34th so far.

Hefner's entertainment venues are all closely intertwined. "Obviously the magazine, in a dramatic way, has changed the central values of our time," he states. While he still considers Playboy Magazine his chef d'oeuvre, the Jazz Festival provides a "visible background" for everything for which the magazine stands. "Jazz is, quite frankly, one cool American art form and... it is the music of our dreams."

Though a worldwide celebrity, Hefner carefully guards his private life within the Playboy Mansion. "I've been able to pretty well control the life and being a public figure," he tell us.

The Jazz Festival is currently Playboy's only regular annual event, underscoring its importance to both the Playboy brand and the music community. "Jazz is the music of my dreams, the music of my travelers and it continues to play in the background of everything I do."
