Hydrocephalus is an abnormal accumulation of spinal fluid in the brain, which is a lifelong condition affecting over one million Americans from newborns to adults. Presently there is no cure. About 40,000 shunt operations are performed each year in the United States as standard treatment for this condition. Due to the lack of advancement in treatment methods, many people with hydrocephalus are unable to lead full and productive lives and many have multiple shunt revisions. Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy are neurological conditions that are often present with Hydrocephalus.

HUGS of Florida, Inc. was founded in 2004 and incorporated in 2010 as a Florida not-for-profit corporation. Founder, Paula Keyser started gathering families together after her son Jeremy was born with this condition. They started out meeting at the Keyser's home for a picnic and have since grown to this annual event. The City of Largo is co-sponsoring this event and Mayor Pat Gerard and Commissioner Michael Smith are planning to attend.

Keyser's hope this year is to not only raise more awareness for this condition, but also enough funds to apply for 501(c)3 status with the Internal Revenue Service. She plans to recruit a volunteer Board of Directors along with someone who has a legal and financial background after this event to assist with the paperwork that is required to file. If you are interested in helping out this organization, please contact Paula Keyser at (727) 851-6705.
