Hunter Douglas Halts Online Sales

Internet window treatment retailers remain dedicated to options and service

In an unprecedented move, Hunter Douglas announced on Monday that it would stop selling blinds and shades through retailers online, channeling customers instead to Hunter Douglas Gallery Stores and dealers. Considering the rapidly growing world of ecommerce and the importance of comparison shopping in today's economy, the announcement took vendors and industry experts by surprise.

Hunter Douglas President and CEO Marv Hopkins attributed the decision to a desire for control over the Hunter Douglas brand image, while Retail Consultant Bob Phibbs noted that the internet is an alternative shopping channel which often makes traditional retailers mad. He commented that retailers sometimes feel "embarrassed" when customers shop in-store and then purchase at a lower price online. With Hunter Douglas relying heavily on upscale gallery stores, the voice of their dealers - who receive product commissions as well as measuring and installation fees - is significant.

Internet window treatment sellers have remained largely undaunted by the bold move. Blindsgalore president Chelle Walters commented, "There are a number of reasons why so many people shop online. Without costly store maintenance, online retailers are able to provide high-quality products at a lower price, and our team can focus on delivering outstanding service." She noted that the company is disappointed to lose Hunter Douglas' partnership after selling their products for over 10 years, but assured that Blindsgalore has strong relationships with other vendors who maintain their commitment to value and customer satisfaction. "We will continue to provide a huge selection of window treatments with options to suit everyone's needs, whether they want every detail and accessory customized or they're looking for a simple window treatment that fits perfectly."

Blindsgalore sells a comprehensive line of window coverings from Bali, Graber, Comfortex, Coolaroo, Levolor, and Kirsch, as well as a private label Blindsgalore collection. All products are custom made to the customer's specifications and shipped direct from the factory. The company's web-only model provides warehouse selection and pricing, online and toll-free customer service, as well as free samples so that customers can see the material in their home before they buy.
