Online, May 27, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Identity fraud is costing the UK more than £1.7bn a year. It is the fastest-growing white-collar crime, increasing by more than 500% every year. It is now a potential threat to small business owners who are busy with the everyday rigours of running a company and steps need to be taken to avoid becoming a victim.
To help companies protect themselves from the problem, Riskdisk has compiled a useful guide to avoiding Identity Fraud, which details the common ways by which unscrupulous criminals will attempt to make illegal gains by using your name. The four page document can be downloaded FREE from the Riskdisk website site.
Some of the more common issues are:
1. Stealing your company identity and then masquerading as you by using your good name to obtain goods and services on credit from suppliers.
2. Fraudsters obtaining signatures of company directors from public records and attempt to attack company bank accounts by purporting to be a signatory on the account.
3. By supplying goods or services to criminals masquerading as another company and subsequently not being paid.
All businesses need to put effective measures in place to make it far harder for criminals to access information that could ultimately be used for criminal activity.
Much of the advice contained in the guide is common sense and applies to individuals as well as companies, but it's certainly worth taking the time to read the document to ensure that you and your staff are fully aware of the issues. Informing staff about the risks of corporate identity fraud will ensure that they remain vigilant.
Establishing company policies to combat fraud will go further still, and ensuring that confidential information is not given out over the phone or internet will increase your company security.
