Outlining the agenda and plan for the year 2010 Dr. Naseer Homoud Goodwill Ambassador and Director of Middle East office for the Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina against Malnutrition (IIMSAM), the Permanent Observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, stressed for better governance strategies and unified action for fighting menaces of world hunger and malnutrition.

He advocates for his objective generating awareness across the globe vis-a-vis food crisis, malnutrition especially in third world countries, lack of food due to poverty, the problems in achieving food security and to forge an alliance against the scourge of hunger.

While expressing his deep concern over alarming rates of hunger which according the Food and Agriculture Organization, over 854 million people are suffering from hunger. The UN Development Programme records show that about 1.2 billion people in the developing world manages their survival on less than $ 1 a day. This is sorry state of affairs that about 78% of the world population resides in these developing countries, where sufficient and nutrient food is not available to feed the populace".

Dr. Homoud further stating his vision to eliminate hunger from the face of the globe observes that 'we stand for the world without hunger and malnutrition. We, as an organization, dream of a world where every single individual is given the healthy and well-nourished food. We aspire for a world, where all human beings irrespective of their country of origin, race, place of birth, economic status and educational qualification can grow, learn and flourish and become the contributing member of the society. But, howsoever good our dreams may be, the reality is that food problems exist in this world. We are still very far from the goal of achieving world without hunger, where problems of malnutrition, ill health, poverty do not exist'.

Dr. Homoud assures the world community especially the third world countries that the future lies in the culturing of Spirulina. The world community must think farming of Spirulina as an option for the eradication of poverty. He further observed that working for the production of Spirulina as the cost effective and nutritious food is the foremost pragmatic resolution which IIMSAM Middle East office has put forward.

At a time when global economic meltdown has had its disastrous effects on the world economy, Dr. Homoud thinks that long term structures and capacity building in the area of world food security need to be erected to counter world hunger. "Sustained and pragmatic solutions are the need of the time and global institutions must work in this regard" he added.
