Why does the Joint Director of the Indian Air Force enroll for a course in management?

Because systems working efficiently fascinate him! Rajesh Puri, an alumnus from IMT-CDL, explains, "My tenures as Flight Commander and Commanding Officer gave me the practical experience of management. It fascinated me, as I realised that correct management techniques turn the system around into a very efficient one." Driven by this insight, he decided to acquire a management degree before taking the plunge into the world of corporate management.

Rajesh took premature retirement from the Indian Air Force on the 29th of February, 2012, to pursue his other interest - management in the corporate world. His last appointment was as Joint Director at Air Force Headquarters, looking after operations in space. He was responsible for forming policies, procedures, doctrines and concepts for Air Operations. He was also part of the nodal agency for media interactions and interactions with various think-tanks like the Centre of Air Power Studies and Centre for Land Air Warfare Studies. He is also a qualified helicopter pilot, holding a current DGCA license as a civil pilot.

He calls his journey with the Air Force "extremely fulfilling". He has served in almost all parts of the country and has accumulated qualifications like Helicopter Combat Leader and Right Hand Seat Check Pilot. He was Flight Commander of an Operational Squadron (second-in-command) and thereafter, Commanding Officer of a very prestigious helicopter squadron of the IAF, which regularly operates in the highest battlefield in the world - Siachen. He was also a part of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Democratic Republic of Congo.

His decision to pursue a management degree made, Rajesh says IMT-CDL was his first choice. The reason he says that is because IMT-CDL allows a professional to earn the degree without leaving his job and offers the amazing flexibility of studying over weekends and holidays. He is extremely appreciative of the emphasis IMT-CDL lays on a practical approach to learning. He says, "During examinations, classes and even for project work and the viva, I laid more stress on various aspects of my personal experiences and they were well understood and liked by examiners and faculty - which was evident from the results."

Rajesh also attributes his successful completion of the course to the world-class faculty at IMT-CDL as he says, "Faculty always supported me and responded promptly to my queries and helped me with the understanding of a subject or situation, be it the IMT faculty or the faculty at my study centre." A big help also came from the IMT online library, and recorded lectures and seminars.

Today, Rajesh Puri feels confident about his knowledge of management and believes that the programme has helped his overall development, both professionally and personally.
