The theme of this year’s Exhibition is ‘Women and Organic Products’. For the first time in India, over 500 women entrepreneurs from Leh to Kanyakumari and from Kohima to Kutch, have come together with their organic products, such as tribal and ethnic foods, pickles and preserves, rice, pulses, spices, fabrics, dyes and dresses, cosmetics, household products, cereals, oils, honey, tea, hair care, bath care, beauty care, aromatherapy products, organic cotton fabric, linen, organic seeds and bio products.
The main aim of the exhibition is to support and encourage women and women-led groups that promote organic farming, thus supporting their local community’s economy, creating jobs and keeping farmers thriving in addition to spreading awareness about the benefits of organic products with the motto, “Eat Healthy, Live Healthy”.
Well known environmentalist and Women & Child rights champion, Union Minister for Women & Child Development, Smt. Maneka Sanjay Gandhi explains the importance of making the shift to organic, "Organic foods have been proven to contain more vitamins, minerals and nutrients than similar foods produced with chemical fertilizers, pesticides and preservatives. Organic farming relies on techniques such as crop rotation, green manure, compost, and organic methods of pest control. Children are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of pesticide exposure." Organic plants and food crops have also been found to contain higher amounts of salicylic acid which fights bowel cancer and the hardening of arteries that leads to heart conditions, strokes and other ailments. Salicylic acid is produced naturally in plants to fight stress and disease. Pesticides inhibit the plant's ability to produce salicylic acid.
The Exhibition becomes a platform to empower women entrepreneurs in a sustainable manner. Besides organic products, people will also get an opportunity to taste a variety of home-cooked and organic food at Dilli Haat. Not only will this initiative benefit women entrepreneurs but also promote the healthier option of organic food and products for consumers in Delhi, as well as across the nation. The Ministry of Women and Child Development aims to follow up this initiative with quarterly exhibitions in different cities so that participants get more frequent opportunities to reach their products to an ever expanding audience.
Economically too, organic farming is preferable. Organic agriculture ultimately reduces cost of cultivation by 20-40% and increases the income of farmers by improving quality of production as well as quality of soil. Better quality of produce fetches enhanced prices and adds 20-40% to profits. The income and savings of a farmer using exclusively organic methods in agriculture increases 50-100% since there is no investment in costly pesticides and fertilizers.
Organic farming protects your health and that of the earth. Research indicates that wild plants, wild species, and birds are much more abundant around organic farms than around conventional farms.
The exhibition has more than 250 stalls selling organic produce. During the Exhibition, entry for all visitors to Dilli Haat, INA, will be free.
