Industrial Immersion Programme - FORE School Of Management (FSM), New Delhi

6th batch of IMG gets the opportunity to visit one of the biggest Inland Container Depots (ICD) in Asia, at CONCOR ICD Dadri

As a part of its formidable industry immersion programme, IMG students of FORE School of Management, New Delhi, were exposed to logistics operations at one of the biggest Inland Container Depots in Asia. The study tour for 44 students of IMG-6 to CONCOR's ICD Dadri was organised on 27th of February 2013. Container Corporation of India Ltd. - better known as CONCOR - is a Government of India (GoI) undertaking under the Ministry of Railways.

"It was a rare opportunity to closely observe such an elaborate logistics exercise," remarked Saurabh Gupta from the IMG-6 batch of FORE School of Management. "We had a lot of time to understand the different services provided by ICD, such as warehousing, containerised cargo trade, customs clearance and shipping lines. The level of planning and strategising needed to run a logistics set-up of that magnitude is absolutely mind-boggling. It was very interesting to understand the methods of loading and unloading of cargos, different types of containers, their identification and naming conventions, and how different security checks are done. Specimens of different documents required for transportation were up on display for us. We got an overall view of how ICD goes about its job of providing a cost effective and quality logistics solution."

'Reefers', or refrigerated containers, facilitate the movement of cargo that requires a strict temperature controlled environment. Running of Reefer services requires a certain level of infrastructure, only available at ICD Dadri and ICD Kanpur. The Reefer containers are moved from the terminal to the factories for stuffing on special trailers, on which a 'clip on' generator can be attached to supply power to the Reefer units.

"It was a great success," pointed out Dr. Mohit Anand, Professor of International Business at FORE School of Management. "Logistics is all set to grow at a neck-break speed in India, and dedicated freight corridors will very soon be the order of the day across the country". This visit materialized after much follow up and persuasion, but we really wanted our budding managers to enter the corporate world armed with this knowledge. It was for this reason that a group of four mentors, including Prof. Ravikesh Srivastava, Prof. Mohita Gangwar Sharma and Prof. Savita Gautam supported this endeavour and accompanied students of IMG-6 on this industrial visit."

It may be recalled that on the 15th of January 2013, FORE School of Management was also instrumental in organising one of the biggest events on the Indian logistics management landscape - the 3rd 'Captains of Logistics' seminar. The seminar - held in the exotic ambience of the Tivoli Garden, New Delhi - was organised around the theme of 'Emerging Trends in Logistics Outsourcing', and allowed students of FORE School of Management to interact with some of the stalwarts of logistics from across the globe. Clearly, FORE School of Management seems to be the right destination for management aspirants who see a bright future in Logistics and Operations.
