Cardiff, United Kingdom (12 November 2010) - A Cardiff based non-profit making educational organization, Innermost Learning, have recently hosted a two day conference for medical professionals on how to mend babies' broken hearts, and how to find out if and how they got broken in the first place.

The conference was organised by local specialists in paediatric cardiology, fetal medicine and obstetrics and the two day event included groundbreaking work as well as tried and tested methods to help identify and manage pregnancies where babies have heart problems.

Dr Orhan Uzun, a Cardiff based consultant Paediatric Cardiologist and Director of Innermost Learning, has had a passionate commitment towards improving the standard of fetal cardiac screening in Wales and has already organised similar smaller one day conferences in the past.

This was the first event organised by Innermost Learning and Dr Bryan Beattie, Consultant in Fetal Medicine and Secretary of Innermost Learning. He said: "I was delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to share experiences and learn more about cardiac anomalies in babies. The earlier we can detect any cardiac problems the more choices we are able to give parents, and the more prepared they can be for the treatments which may lie ahead for their child. For professionals, it is important to always be up to date with new developments to give your patients the best quality care, so I am pleased to see that the take up rate for the conference has been so good. This is probably one of the biggest Fetal Cardiac Conferences in the UK, and the two day event attracted a lot of interest from healthcare professionals throughout the UK."

The event also heralded the introduction of two new views (the outflow tracts) to assess the fetal heart at the routine 20 weeks Anomaly Scan which is being held throughout Wales. This should significantly improve the pick-up rate for babies with heart problems as nationally in the UK only about half are detected at present. The event was held at the Parc Hotel Thistle, Cardiff on 4th and 5th November 2010 and was co-sponsored by Innermost Secrets Ltd.
