Innovaccer Releases Healthcare's First Ever Research on Social Determinants of Health With Zip Code-Level Insights Across the US
Innovaccer has applied ML algorithms to 55+ factors to deliver one of the most accurate views ever for social determinants of health
SAN FRANCISCO, January 31, 2019 (Newswire.com) - Innovaccer Inc., the leading healthcare data platform company, has taken social determinants of health (SDOH) to a new level with its in-house research on the social vulnerabilities of the population across the U.S. The research paper named “From Myth to Reality - Revolutionizing Healthcare with Augmented Intelligence and Social Determinants of Health” discusses a revolutionary way of leveraging advanced algorithms to determine the social vulnerability of the zip code-level population. The research was led by renowned healthcare experts David Nace, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Innovaccer, and Vibhuti Agrawal Ph. D., Director of Analytics at Innovaccer.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has defined an algorithm to estimate the Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) for every census-tract in the U.S. The algorithm is based on a simple summation of the percentile ranks for all SDOHs, which often results in an over-estimation of social vulnerability in cases of high positive correlation between multiple SDOHs.
In order to improve on the limitations of the CDC model, Innovaccer has developed its proprietary algorithms to narrow down to understand the impact of social determinants of health. By adding more social determinant dimensions to address the limitation of the CDC’s algorithm, Innovaccer has developed a comprehensive and robust method for computing SVI.
“Innovaccer continues to innovate! The SVI is a real breakthrough in our ability to link the social determinants of health to health outcomes. It will help us navigate on the long road from volume to value. Remember that in the future, the watchword is ‘NO OUTCOME, NO INCOME.’ Innovaccer has embodied this concept today, and is preparing us all for tomorrow,” says David B. Nash, MD, MBA, Founding Dean, Jefferson College of Population Health.
“Turning population health from philosophy to practice and value-based care from a myth to a method will take exactly the kind of a mix between technology and science that is demonstrated by the SVI. Innovaccer has become a leader in utilizing augmented intelligence to finally address social determinants of health,” says Stephen K. Klasko, MD, MBA, President and CEO, Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health.
The approach sets off with the calculation of SVI score for every state, assisted with advanced regression. The state-level ranking can be drilled down further to a county or even a zip code. The paper discusses the progression of these social elements over time and how they differ across different segments of the population and summarizes their effects to a more granular level of analysis.
“Healthcare data has a lot of valuable insights, but it is locked because a lot of people cannot really manage that data. We plan to revolutionize care delivery and we intend to do it by making full use of all the data that our industry has worked so hard to collect; by righting the wrongs, doing away with long-standing problems and replacing them with ideal solutions,” says Abhinav Shashank, CEO at Innovaccer. “Social determinants of health are the future and we are confident that our research will help healthcare organizations tackle complex barriers and understand what makes the patients return to the four walls of hospitals.”
“A majority of a person’s health and well-being exists outside of a hospital but there are very limited ways for providers to understand what the social determinants mean. With this research, we hope to equip physicians with the knowledge they need to make sure that their patients get the assistance they need. It’s how we come closer to patient-centered care,” says David Nace MD, author of the research and CMO at Innovaccer.
