International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) to Hold Facebook Fan-raising Weekend
The IASP will hold a Facebook Fan-Raising weekend on August 28th and 29th to help increase awareness of suicide prevention locally and worldwide and to raise 5,000 fans in honor of the organization's 50th anniversary.
Online, August 17, 2010 (Newswire.com) - The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) was formed in 1960 to prevent suicidal behaviour, to alleviate its effects and to provide a forum for academics, mental health professionals, crisis workers, volunteers and suicide survivors. IASP now includes professionals and volunteers from more than 50 countries. In addition, IASP is a non-governmental organization (NGO) in official relationship with the World Health Organization (WHO). Every year, on Sept 10th the IASP co-sponsors World Suicide Prevention Day with the WHO. Last year, the event involved thousands of participants in hundreds of locations in over 40 countries around the world.
This IASP Facebook Fan-Raising Weekend will be held online on August 28th and 29th, 2010.
The purpose of this event is to honour the achievements of this esteemed organization and to increase suicide prevention awareness locally and worldwide.
On the weekend of August 28th and 29th, participants will use the official 50th IASP image as their personal Facebook profile image and will also encourage their friends to become IASP Facebook Fans.
The goal of this event is to tap into the 400 million active Facebook users and to encourage .000125% or 5,000 fans to support the work of the IASP. The IASP now has over 4,000 Facebook Fans.
Each year as many as 1,000,000 people are estimated to die by suicide across the globe; many, many more make nonfatal attempts. We cannot underestimate the impact these fatal and nonfatal attempts have on loved ones, friends and associates.
If you are a Facebook user, we invite you to support the IASP and become a Facebook Fan of the IASP.
