International Prostate Expert Group (IPEG) starts multicenter clinical trial of BPH treatment with worlds first Dual wavelength laser and innovative Twister fiber

Experts have finalized protocol for a multicenter study of the treatment of BPH with biolitec's innovative high-technology laser system Evolve™ DUAL and Twister fiber - Meeting of international urology specialists in Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul, Turkey/Jena, Germany - www.biolitec.de - After a productive kick-off meeting in Istanbul and finalization of the trial protocol, leading international urology experts have officially started an multinational clinical trial of the BPH treatment with the world's first Dual wavelength laser.

Benign Prostate Hyperplasia (BPH) is troubling approximately 60 percent of all men over 60 and the prevailing definitive treatment so far has been by electro-resection. Impotence and incontinence as well as significant loss of blood during and after the procedure are the current main concerns. The first laser systems on the market have reduced some of the problems, but bleeding and bladder perforation risks haven't been fully addressed.

Evolve™ DUAL, biolitec's latest laser technology, sets a new standard of efficacy and safety. With two parallel working wavelengths of 1470 nm and 980 nm, it combines the characteristics of high ablation rates with excellent hemostasis due to its combined effect of absorption in water and haemoglobin. In combination with the innovative Twister™ fiber, higher ablation rates are achieved while intra and post-operative bleeding as well as other side effects are reduced to a minimum. There is no risk to injure the bladder or other unintentional areas, as it existed with other lasers. Experienced urologists, who work with the new fiber, appreciate it as extremely efficient and - in the interest of the patient - gentle treatment.

In the Medical Park Hospital Göztepe, one of the most experienced centers of excellence and training centers for laser treatment worldwide, the physicians met to develop standardized techniques for the treatment with the new laser in combination with the Twister fiber. The standardization should not only provide a basis for the international multicenter study, but also for the best possible education of urologists with the new system. Each of the specialists has brought in his experience with other lasers as well as the Evolve™ system and in collective surgeries best practices for different indications have been defined.

The International Prostate Expert Group (IPEG) is an independently formed collaboration of physicians and researchers from ten centers worldwide with extensive experience in BPH laser therapy. It was founded in 2006 in order to research, share and present information on the optimal use of and outcomes for BPH lasers. The group has devoted itself to identifying and disseminating best practices for different lasers as minimally invasive treatment options for BPH. It is comprised of physicians and scientists from renowned medical research centers in Australia, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Turkey as well as US centers in Massachusetts, California and New York.
