Iranian Courier Service App Peykyab Delivers Where Others Fall Short; Now Its Sights Are Set on Expansion

In Tehran, the burgeoning startup culture of Iran, one rapidly-growing business is poised to take on more Iranian cities and regions.

Peykyab was created to fill the need for a reliable, inexpensive alternative to courier services in Tehran, a city in which up to 400,000 parcels are sent and delivered each day. Drawing inspiration from Uber and other ride-hailing models, the app “hails” a courier, tracks the parcel’s progress, and notifies the sender/receiver when the order is delivered.

The service has seen rapid growth since its launch in 2016. Now, Peykyab is expanding throughout Iran and aiming to grow within the region.

Iran’s reputation as the startup hub of the Middle East is attracting more and more foreign investors, but not all new business ventures succeed. Peykyab gained traction from the start. Company founder Ali Maserrat, who holds a Finance degree from Ryerson University of Toronto, developed the app in response to mounting frustrations in the business community over traditional courier services.

Most courier services schedule multiple orders in a single trip, meaning the customer’s parcel is just one of many in a queue of pickups and deliveries. Peykyab, available for Android and IOS, changed the model by using freelance couriers. Each order is handled individually, by a single agent, with no multiple stops. Moreover, because Peykyab couriers use motorbikes, they outpace traffic on Tehran’s heavily-congested streets.

The app allows customers to schedule pickups in advance and offers a tracking tool with which both sender and receiver can monitor their package in transit. They can also receive an SMS or push notification to follow the status of their order.

New features for the app are already in development, says Maserrat. Peykyab follows Agile development methodology, the standard framework used by companies like Facebook and other Silicon Valley giants today.

Bolstered by its local reputation for efficiency and economy, the startup is now aiming for expansion into new Iranian territory. Many local and international investors have shown interest. For now, the company is holding out for the right investors who have similar agendas.

Meanwhile, Maserrat expects to capture a greater share of the B2C market. The app’s API connection to e-commerce sites is a plus for online e-businesses and Instagram stores looking for a simpler, more affordable way to ship their goods.
