Is GATE a Natural Choice for Engineers?
Online, March 11, 2014 (Newswire.com) - Perhaps, this issue has been little debated in our higher educational discourses. We normally hear that students who are in their Final Year of Engineering or those who have just passed out of engineering, gearing themselves to crack the GATE exam and make into higher studies. We might have also heard about many students joining coaching institutions purportedly to get better guidance to clear the GATE. Undergraduate engineers usually face the question of why have they not done M.Tech or are appearing for the GATE.
Every year thousands of candidates appear for the GATE. Have they all made their choices wisely? Or is that the presumed norm that once done with the engineering once has to go for the higher technical studies that has pushed many to take up the GATE? Put simply, is GATE a natural choice for Engineers? The answer is a categorical NO. This writer expresses displeasure over the way the exam is being painted and branded as a natural choice for engineers.
Almost every ordinary engineer passing out makes an attempt to qualify for the GATE. One doesn't know exactly how many have made their choice consciously, but it is highly palpable that there is a mad rush to the GATE rather than a well thought plan to take up the higher studies. Add to this is the mushrooming of coaching centers.
There are many students who have meticulously planned their career and have made up their minds to go through the GATE. There are equally many who have simply ignored the GATE; this includes this writer as well, for they too have well thought out of their career prospects. In between these two groups, there are umpteen candidates who succumb to extraneous choices just because they are swayed by the trends.
So be wise. GATE is not a natural choice for all engineers, as we analyze the issue further. However, GATE has innumerable opportunities for engineers to make a bright future. In fact it is one of very few reputed positions that can earn respect and recognition for our academic research work done. So be optimistic on what GATE has to offer after deliberating the pros and cons.
