"Is it worth watching Netflix's Daredevil?" Whichin App Lets Users Compare Opinions

“Is it worth watching Netflix’s Daredevil? Yes or No?” Whichin, an innovative app that launched in March from Calide Entertainment, hopes to change local, anonymous opinion gathering through picture-based questions like this. Whichin's creative and thought-provoking questions offer a new method of social interaction.

The app allows users to easily post “this or that” questions, called Whichins, and to vote on existing Whichins (with a quick double tap). The Whichins have an image for each answer; users can upload their own pictures from their device's camera or gallery, or they can search for images on the web through the app.

Whichin app is "The feed of local curiosities." We make gathering opinions easy, fast and fun. You can be yourself, and you can find out what the people around you are really thinking, without having to know them already.

Duygu Altinsoy, Founder

“This is not just another boring poll application,” said Duygu Altinsoy, one of Whichin's two founders. “We make gathering opinions easy, fast and fun. These are not ordinary questions; they have a deeper meaning and get people to think. You can be yourself, and you can find out what the people around you are really thinking, without having to know them already.”

These Whichins can range from funny to serious:

  • Would you rather eat dorm food for the rest of your life or accidentally sext your parents?
  • You got some work you need to do at home. Would you turn on some music or watch TV?
  • Is Roku 3 or Apple TV better for watching college football games?
  • New pair of shoes or gas money for a month?
  • Earth Day is just passed! Do you think it gets enough exposure or no?

User-generated lists are a popular feature on sites like Buzzfeed, but Whichin brings a new perspective by focusing on local content, protecting users' anonymity, and emphasizing more meaningful interaction and learning. It helps people to not only share their own opinions, but also to find out what those around them are wondering and thinking. In this way, Whichin becomes “the feed of local curiosities.”

There's no sign-up needed, unlike most Q&A or list-making apps, and users don't have to worry about having their responses linked to their identity or other social media profiles. However, an upcoming anonymous chat feature will allow users to connect with like-minded people and continue the discussions that Whichins can spark.

The Whichin feed is also sorted by distance, so that questions from nearby appear first. Soon, Whichin will also add city-based feeds, and each Whichin (question) will have an auto-generated hashtag based on the posting location. Users will be able to click on these hashtags to see a filtered list of questions only from that city.

Altinsoy has been working in the digital advertising industry for more than eight years. She holds a PhD in Neuroeconomics, and she is a marketing entrepreneur with a proven track record of executing interactive advertising campaigns for the world's most recognized brands – including Unilever, Nestle, and News Corporation – representing over $100 million USD in spending.

The second founder of Whichin is Kerem Ozkan holds a PhD in Cognitive Science. He is also the Founder and Managing Director of the interactive agency Proje Calide, which in two years has grown to become one of the best agencies in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) region. They now have offices in Los Angeles and Istanbul.

Calide hopes to attract an audience of any users interesting in gathering collective knowledge, but particularly high school and college students. They chose Whichin's logo, a  macaw, because this bird symbolizes active minds.

In the era of mobile communication, it's important for apps to help people find the highest-quality information quickly. Whichin satisfies this need by providing a simple and exciting way to let people learn what's happening around them and share their own thoughts on these hot topics.
