Is Zinc a Wine Country Favorite?

A West Coast home gets a fresh look with an indoor-outdoor living space and wine room featuring a zinc countertop by Copperworks.

Copperworks, a custom manufacturer in Petaluma, recently worked with the DIY Network show, House Crashers, to enhance an all seasons living space with a zinc countertop. In a dramatic transformation, an extra room became a wine room with a modern vibe.

House Crashers host, Josh Temple, focused the designers and crew as they dramatically transformed an old patio area into a usable indoor/outdoor space.

According to Joe Cain, President of Copperworks, the popularity of zinc has risen dramatically in the last 5 years. "A few years ago we would see a couple zinc countertops each year. Now, we are shipping hundreds of countertops in zinc and copper each year," explains Cain. He attributes this to a trend in interior design to more traditional materials that react to use such as copper and zinc.

"We were happy to work with the production crew of the show and saw the opportunity to showcase one of our products," Cain continues. "It shows that a simple countertop in zinc can add a rockstar look to the room."

In fact, many of the zinc countertops that Copperworks has made recently have been for kitchen islands only and not the rest of the kitchen. Kitchen designers use a different material for the island top because it is a mixed use space - partly a workspace and partly a meeting area.

In addition to the residential island tops, Copperworks has fabricated some dramatic countertops in zinc and copper for restaurants and bars across the country. "When I bought Copperworks from [founder] John Strong our primary product was range hoods. In the last two years, our range hood business went down dramatically, but our countertop orders increased," Cain states. "We now have our work in businesses in at least 5 states with a lot in California. In fact, we are doing all of the copper table tops for the Dos Coyotes restaurant chain in the Sacramento area, and we have a copper bar top in a restaurant on San Francisco's Embarcadero."

Keep looking for Copperworks. Rumor has it that they will have a product featured on an upcoming HGTV show.
