It's Time to Get Involved

Online, September 19, 2010 (Newswire.com) - Indianapolis, IN - National Council on Educating Black Children (NCEBC) is a premier non-profit and civil rights organization with a distinguished focus on improving educational opportunities and outcomes for African American children. By galvanizing "coalitions of the willing", NCEBC is aggressively implementing solutions that elevate communities by empowering stakeholders who are ready to "take responsibility" for their villages.

The list of accomplishments in 2010 includes the completion of the 2010 Annual Convention in Las Vegas, NV and the Indiana Statewide Conference that organized 16 cities across the state of Indiana into community teams with action plans to address issues specific to their communities. Also in 2010, NCEBC Literacy Centers and cultural competency training programs garnered the financial support of the US Department of Education via the 21st Century Learning Center grant program in conjunction with school districts in Indiana. All of these accomplishments were achieved due to the hard work of gracious NCEBC members, limited staff, and committed volunteers.

Across the country, NCEBC is empowering stakeholders and their communities (villages) to increase high school and college graduation rates among African American children, particularly Black Boys. NCEBC needs your help to continue the movement. Please join NCEBC to keep our important programs alive:

**NCEBC Augustus F. Hawkins Literacy Centers are operating in cities across the country to enhance the instructional support provided by public and charter schools to those students who are at extremely high risk for academic failure. Center locations are usually characterized by high crime, violence, low-socioeconomic conditions, and households headed by single females.

**NCEBC Parental Involvement Initiatives focus on "Parent Empowerment" -- Parents and families have rights and responsibilities, and should be encouraged to take responsibility for the education of their children. NCEBC's "Good Choices" campaign features tips and links to local resources for parents of school-age children.

**NCEBC's "Touching the Spirit" program helps teachers learn about their students' cultural "spirit" and develop teaching practices and learning activities that empower and engage their students' interest and involvement.

**NCEBC Asa G. Hilliard, III Mentoring Program's focus is upon African American males and the development of those youngsters toward complete manhood. NCEBC strives to support the many successful mentoring programs already in existence and help expand services to include as many youngsters as possible.
