January Is Glaucoma Awareness Month

Glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness, which is why a whole month is dedicated to raising awareness.

According to the World Health Organization, Glaucoma is currently an incurable eye disease that affects the eye care of 2.7 million Americans and over 60 million people worldwide; and it has no symptoms. It has been nicknamed, "the sneak thief of sight," making it the second leading cause of blindness. As scary as this may sound, glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness, which is why a whole month is dedicated to raising awareness.

Did you know that up to 40% of your vision could be lost without you knowing it? That is why regular eye exams are so important. In the same way you get a check up each year, comprehensive eye exams are equally important. Although there is no cure, early detection is key in the fight against this disease. Medication or surgery can prevent or slow down its progression.

Glaucoma occurs when the fluid level inside your eyeball rises causing an increased pressure. This pressure can damages the optic nerve, which leads to blindness. If you or someone you know has glaucoma, make sure to share the importance of eye exams. Regular eye exams are important for those at a higher risk such as African Americans, Asians, Hispanics, people over 60, as well as family members of those that have already been diagnosed.

Start this year off right by getting a comprehensive eye exam and taking the necessary approach to eye care. If you have any questions, please contact the East West Eye Institute at 877-871-1684 or visit www.eastwesteye.com
