Jimi Hendrix Poetry Remix

Online, March 13, 2012 (Newswire.com) - COPUS is a rap/jazz/fusion ensemble that focuses on the power of the spoken word intertwined with the beauty of music. Formed in 1998 by poet Royal Kent and composer/pianist Wendy Loomis, the group has expanded to include flutist Monica Williams, bassist Patrick Mahon, and percussionists Santee Huckaby and Greg Doxey. COPUS has performed extensively throughout the San Francisco Bay Area as well as in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Nashville, Boston, and Western Mass.

Their latest creative endeavor is to select 'cover songs' by well-known artists that were more recognized for their musicality than their brilliant poetry. Jimi Hendrix is a prime example. COPUS has produced an arrangement of the Hendrix song 'A Mermaid I Should Turn to Be' and now performs it live among their originals. "...oh say can you see it's really such a mess - every inch of earth is a fighting nest. giant pencil and lip-stick tube shaped things continue to rain and cause screaming pain and the arctic stains from silver blue to bloody red as our feet find the sand and the sea is straight ahead..."

COPUS will be performing covers 'Mermaid' and 'Pastime Paradise' (Stevie Wonder) as well as their original compositions including 'Later Than You Think', 'Natty Dread', and 'The Fool' at 50 Mason Social House in downtown San Francisco on Friday, April 6th. This is a free event that encourages all lovers of spoken word, poetry, and intelligence outside the box to come and partake.
