John Hullverson Breaks Longest Standing US Men's Freediving Record
Online, May 26, 2014 (Newswire.com) - John Hullverson Breaks Longest Standing US Men's Freediving Record.
George Town, Grand Cayman. Dark horse newcomer, John Hullverson of Northern California, surprised the US Freediving world by capturing his first US Men's National Freediving Record in the freediving discipline of Dynamic No Fins with a swim of 142 meters / 466 feet. John added three meters / ten feet on to the previous record of 139 meters / 456 feet, set by Anthony Babowicz in 2009. John's swim took place at the Caymana Bay Athletic Club pool on the island of Grand Cayman, BWI.
John's performance took two minutes and thirty-two seconds to complete. He is competing in the DejaBlueV freediving competition hosted by Performance Freediving International, an annual event. His performance was completed in the twenty-five meter pool of the club and verified by two AIDA judges.
Grant W. Graves, lead judge, reported, "John appeared strong and surfaced well from his record swim. He had a little fatigue, but performed his surface protocol cleanly and within the required fifteen seconds. John is a relative newcomer having only competed a few times previously. This was a big surprise to us all."
John said of his performance, "I really wasn't expecting to break the record tonight. It's been a long day and I was a little tired when I got to the pool. I think that took the pressure off and allowed me to just go have some fun with it. Ted Harty gave me some really good advice about my buoyancy and I made a little adjustment, and it worked out pretty well."
Dynamic No Fins is performed by swimming without fins in a pool with the athlete holding their breath swimming as far as they can. Distance is measured with the use of a metered tape measure. The pool must be at least twenty-five yards long for the performance to be valid. Other disciplines include tests in depth and time.
