The question is: what happens to those who are left behind when Medicaid changes?

With nearly 30 years dedicated to law, Berkowitz brings a wealth of knowledge to her industry, and, in particular to her area of specialization, elder law. When asked why she decided to pursue a career in law, Berkowitz said:

"Before going to law school, I worked in a nursing home as a nurse’s aide. If you ever spend any time in a nursing home it leaves an impression on you. You become aware of how vulnerable people can be and the importance of having an advocate. That experience definitely helped focus my interest in elder law."

One of only twelve Certified Elder Law Attorneys in the state of Missouri, Berkowitz provides capable and compassionate representation in matters ranging from long-term planning, such as the creation of wills and trusts, to more immediate concerns, including Medicaid benefits planning and qualification, guardianships, conservatorships, as well as probate and trust administration.

As a thought leader in her field, Berkowitz keeps a close watch on prevailing trend in elder law. In particular, she highlighted the potential impacts of possible changes to Medicaid. She noted:

"The main concern is how the cost of long-term care is going to be handled for future generations. Many people are simply not in a position to purchase long-term care insurance or to save up enough during their lifetimes to cover the cost of their long-term care. So the question is: what happens to those who are left behind when Medicaid changes?"

Berkowitz previously taught elder law at St. Louis University School of Law and is active in numerous local professional associations. In addition to serving as the incoming Chairman of the Elder Law Committee of the Missouri Bar (MoBar), she has also authored chapters in several Missouri Bar reference books. Among these are chapters on estate planning and Medicaid eligibility in Missouri.

Berkowitz is also an active member of the Missouri Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys as well as of the national organization. Outside of the attorney organizations in which she is involved, Berkowitz also serves as Member of the Board of Directors for the Missouri Mid-East Area Agency on Aging.

Berkowitz is rated AV® Preeminent™, Martindale-Hubbell®’s highest possible rating, and has also been selected to Super Lawyers® five times.
