JustFly and Flighthub on the Traveler's Mindset (Part 1)

People travel for different reasons—leisure, business, personal growth and more. Travel should also be simple and enjoyable. Mental preparation is by far one of the most important parts of a successful trip. Unfortunately, it often gets overlooked.

To help people travel more easily, FlightHub and JustFly have created a short series of practical tips for travelers from all walks of life.

Be Patient:

Always be mindful of the possibility that something may go wrong. Flights get delayed, hotel rooms aren’t always ready, restaurants have lineups. These things can’t be changed. A person’s response to them can. Practice patience.

Be a Morning Person:

Travel tips like this one are low risk, high reward. Start the day at or before sunrise. Get more genuine interactions with locals and more vitamin D. Take advantage of the smaller crowds. Photos will turn out better. Get more out of the day and trip. Set an alarm. Wake up early.

Don’t Be Too Serious:

Funny, awkward and weird things happen, when they do, don’t get upset. This is a once in a lifetime experience. Find the silver lining and laugh. Embarrassing moments make great travel stories.

Speak with Locals:

Leave the comfort zone. Smile, wave and be friendly. Communicate with sincerity. It opens doors to new experiences.

People Watch:

It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle of traveling. Find a coffee shop, public park, or anywhere else with a good flow of people. Take a seat, a few deep breaths and take it all in. Learn about a place from its people. Pay attention.

Take Pictures:

Memories fade. Digital photography doesn’t. Pictures are also a great way to inspire others to travel. Take pictures of locations, food and people, then put the camera down. Enjoy the moment. Also, practice photo etiquette. Sometimes cameras aren’t allowed. Some people don’t want their picture taken. Be respectful.

Be Determined:

Traveling makes people resourceful. Face challenges and be creative with solutions. Ran out of money? Ask friends, family, or work somewhere for cash. Missed a connection? Find an alternate route. When faced with obstacles, never quit.

Be Great:

Make any encounter with people memorable. Be kind when they’re unpleasant. Remain calm when they’re irritable. Try to be empathetic whenever possible, especially when things go wrong. This is what travel is about. Keep an open mind. Leave stereotypes at home.

Give Back:

Give to a worthy cause. Research and find a way to help. It may be the most rewarding part of the trip. It’s affordable, may not take much time, and it’s a great way to meet people and get cultural insight. Pay it forward.

Be Fearless:

Millions of people travel the world every year. They return home unscathed. The world isn’t as dangerous as it’s made out to be. Know the landscape and make sensible decisions. Everything else will be fine.

Leave the Comfort Zone Behind:

Be willing to be uncomfortable for a while. Travel is for new experiences. Afraid of heights? Go parasailing or bungee jumping. Anti-social? Start with a smile and wave at a stranger. Break away from patterns. Set new limits.

Experiment with Travel:

The only way to truly become a better traveler is trial and error. Try traveling alone, with a significant other or in a large group. Travel on a budget or luxuriously. Do whatever’s necessary to find what works best.

Speak the Language:

This is a sign of humility and respect. It’s easy to learn a few common expressions in a foreign language. It breaks down barriers, makes people more willing to help, and almost always gets a good response.

Traveling is fun, but it’s not always easy. A little preparation goes a long way. Follow these simple tips to improve travel experiences and make the most of every trip.
