Karen Lam leads the new wave of female-driven horror films, using a beautifully macabre directing style that is drawing in genre audiences en mass. Featured in Fangoria magazine in February 2012 as an auteur filmmaker to watch, Karen's work exquisitely balances the delicate line between art film and horror film.

In a year where the Cannes Film Festival has been criticized for the lack of female-helmed feature films in competition, a wave of underground female-directed genre has been steadily growing. Karen has been active in this international movement of female genre filmmakers, yet her work stands apart, by tapping into the distinct construct of the female monster.

"Male horror filmmakers have dominated the monster world, but there's a distinct difference in what we deem to be monstrous. If my films encourage other women to embrace their own inner demons, then I think I've succeeded," Karen says with a wry smile.

Since June 2011, Karen's short film Doll Parts has screened in over 35 film festivals world wide, winning numerous awards including best horror short and best director. At Cannes, her newest work The Stolen (2012) has its debut presentation in the Short Film Corner. Karen is in active pre-production on her second feature film Evangeline, an expansion of her world of female revenge horror, which she is selling this year at Cannes with a proposed 2013 release date.
